Madison Mayor Wants Opt-In Ordinance For Concealed Carry

Madison Mayor Paul Soglin said he intends to propose an ordinance to restrict concealed weapons before the state bill is even law.

Under the bill that passed the Assembly on Tuesday, individuals and businesses can restrict concealed weapons in their homes and businesses by posting signs giving notice that concealed weapons aren't allowed.

Soglin said he wants an ordinance requiring signs to opt-in for allowing concealed weapons.

The mayor said he will soon propose an ordinance that would make it illegal to carry a concealed weapon into any structure within the city unless there is expressed permission, through signs, that the home or business owner allows it.

"No one can come in your property carrying a weapon, concealed or otherwise, without asking you for permission," Soglin said. "I think it's very simple. Folks come into our homes all the time; they ask if they can smoke. They're polite; they're guests. I don't think this is unreasonable."

4 Teens Arrested After Alleged Assault

Madison police arrested four teens after an alleged hate crime on the city's north side on Monday afternoon.

Police said the victim, a 17-year-old girl, was followed off a city bus from East Towne Mall on the 2000 block of Manley Street at around 3:30 p.m. The four teens, two 16-year-old boys and two 15-year-old girls, followed the victim for several blocks, making derogatory comments questioning her sexual orientation, according to police.

One of the boys then knocked her down, kicked her several times and grabbed her backpack, all while continuing to make derogatory remarks, police said.

The teens then ran away, but police found three of them in front of a home in the 1700 block of Loftsgordon Avenue shortly after. The fourth suspect ran out of the house and was apprehended a few minutes later on the 1400 block of Sherman Avenue, according to authorities.

Police found the victim's backpack with the help of a K-9 unit.

The Mallards got the scoring started in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Jones (Long Island). They then scored three times in the fourth on RBI hits by Justin Scanlon (Michigan State) and Willie Argo (Illinois). Jordan Owen (Tennessee - Martin), Andrew Barna (Davidson), and Travis Parker (St. Louis) all added RBIs in the seventh and eighth innings to account for the remainder of Madison's runs.

As it turns out, Mallards' starter Rusty Shellhorn (Texas Tech) would only need the first run scored by his offense for support. Shellhorn had yet another masterful outing, going six full innings and allowing no runs. Although he walked four, Shellhorn struck out seven and lowered his ERA to 1.17. With the win, his record stands at 3-0.
