Madison School Board Member Changes Mind On Gift Cards

Madison School Board Member Changes Mind On Gift Cards

A Madison Metropolitan School District Board of Education member is withdrawing his proposal to use $1.3 million in docked teacher pay to give workers $200 year-end bonuses.

Board member Ed Hughes said that his proposal stirred up a "hornet's nest of resentment" in the community.

He said he will continue to look at ways to recognize teachers' hard work but the board doesn't need such distractions.

The $1.05 million proposal called for giving $200 Dane Buy Local gift cards to more than 4,000 teachers and other employees, and another $60 to cover taxes, as a year-end bonus.

The district closed school for four days in February because two-thirds of teachers called in sick to attend protests over Gov. Scott Walker's proposed changes to public sector collective bargaining.

New Duck Pond To Be On Display During High School Baseball Game

The first event to be held in the newly-renovated Madison Mallards Duck Pond at Warner Park will be a high school baseball game between Madison East and Madison LaFollette on Friday, May 27 at 7:05 p.m.

Normally, the Duck Pond is the home field for both schools, but with the ongoing $1.8M ballpark construction project that began in the fall, each school had to relocate to different venues this season.

Admission is free for the seven-inning contest; however, a $4 donation is suggested with half of the proceeds benefiting the Madison Parks Foundation and the other half benefiting the Habitat for Humanity of Dane County.

Proceeds from concessions will be split evenly between the two participating high schools.

The event will provide a sneak peak for baseball fans to check out the Mallard's spectacular new home.

Tickets are available at the Mallards box office or via phone by calling 608.316.DUCK (3825).

Madison police said copper tubing was cut out of the air conditioning unit at the Prime Quarter Steak House at 3520 East Washington Avenue.

Police said an employee tried to turn on the air conditioning system and found it broken.
