Parking tickets can be a nuisance for drivers, but in Madison they are a major source of city revenue. Last year, the city got some $5.3 million from parking tickets.
But many people don't pay their parking fines, pushing the value of unpaid parking tickets in Madison to $1.6 million since 2007, WISC-TV reported.
City leaders admit the process used to collect from parking violators who aren't paying up needs review.
"There are a lot of vehicles that get a ticket a day," said Stefanie Niesen, a Madison parking enforcement supervisor.
Some residents said they were surprised that $1.6 million in parking fines has gone uncollected in Madison.
"That's a high number," said Eric Mueller.
"That's ridiculous. That's just unbelievable," said Jon Smith.
