VSA Wisconsin Gallery Features 2 Artists

VSA Wisconsin Gallery Features 2 Artists

The works of Alex Murtaugh, an artist who specializes in digital collages of urban scenes, and Seth Albertson, who draws traffic signals and freeway interchanges will be featured in the VSA Wisconsin Gallery through Feb. 29. The gallery is open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2 to 5:30 p.m. or by appointment.

The public is invited to meet the artists at a reception on Friday, Jan. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Albertson's highly detailed line drawings result in intriguing designs where maps, diagrams and reality merge to communicate a unique understanding of complex urban planning. Murtaugh's compositions include people, animals and locations, real and imagined; made with elements of his own photography and cartoons. Each can take up to three months to complete because of the complex detail.

Madison, Eugene Mayors Make Community-Based Rose Bowl Wager

Madison, Eugene Mayors Make Community-Based Rose Bowl Wager

Madison Mayor Paul Soglin and Eugene, Ore., Mayor Kitty Piercy have made a friendly wager on the Rose Bowl that will make either community a winner pending the outcome of the Wisconsin Badgers and Oregon Ducks match up.

"We wanted to develop a wager that could benefit our entire community and particularly those most in need," Soglin said in a news release.

Each mayor has committed to privately raising $500 if their team loses. The money will then be used for tools for Habitat for Humanity organizations in either Madison or Eugene.

"Each of us will raise the money privately and no city funds are involved," Soglin said. "This is a great program and we both want to support it."

Both mayors said they are aware of the growing need for shelters and services for the homeless. They each credit Habitat for Humanity for the work it is doing. But each also is rooting on their favorite teams in the Rose Bowl.

Salvation Army Says Donations Are Up

Salvation Army Says Donations Are Up

The Salvation Army of Dane County said more people are ringing bells and giving this holiday season.

Preliminary retail numbers show more people are shopping this holiday season, and it looks like Dane County's shoppers are giving more to those famous red kettles.

The Salvation Army of Dane County said its current kettle donation total of $156,000 is up $10,000 from last year at this time. And bringing technology to the forefront of its Red Kettle campaign, the Salvation Army is hoping QR codes help recruit volunteers and prompt shoppers to make credit card donations.

"We have worked very hard this season to get the coverage," said Maj. Loren Carter. "Because we figured that each shift represents about a $100 of income at each location. And so the coverage is very important."

Out of 12,000 total bell ringing shifts, 7,000 shifts are left for the season. The goal for this year's campaign is set at $715,000.
