Police Say 50-Year-Old Woman Faces OWI Charge

A Madison police officer was on routine patrol along East Washington Avenue, near Stoughton Road, early Wednesday morning when she came upon a car on top of a snow bank.

The driver told the officer she was fine and had just gotten off work, but after further discussion, the officer determined the driver, Melody Stumpf, 50, had been drinking, police said.

The officer said she asked Stumpf what time she had finished her job and she said at 10:30 p.m. When the officer asked Stumpf if she knew what time it was, she answered about 10:30 p.m.

Stumpf seemed surprised when the officer informed her it was actually about 3 a.m., police said. The driver was arrested for fourth offense drunken driving, according to police.

North Side Woman Victim Of Purse Snatching

Madison police are looking for a woman who stole a purse from another woman as she put groceries into her car after visiting a grocery store on the city's north side.

The incident happened at around 2:15 p.m. on Monday in the parking lot of Pierce’s Northside Market on North Sherman Avenue.

The woman told police thatshe was putting groceries into her car when a stranger approached her and asked for the time and then asked for some change.

Police said right after the stranger did this, she grabbed the purse from inside the woman’s car and took off in an aqua- or teal-colored getaway car. Police said there appeared to be two others in the car with the thief.

Police describe the suspect as a black woman, between 5 feet 5 inches and 5 feet 7 inches tall, with a medium to slender build. She had a dark complexion, short hair and was wearing a black hat and a black jacket.

Woman Arrested On Suspicion Of Taking Heroin In Library

A 50-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of heroin possession after being prevented from overdosing on the drug inside the bathroom of a Madison public library.

Police said that they believe Deborah Rangel, of Madison, is lucky to be alive after officers found her in a bathroom of the Lakeview branch of the Madison Public Library, overdosed on heroin.

The incident happened just after 4 p.m. on Saturday at the library, which is located in the 2800 block of North Sherman Avenue.

Police and Madison Fire Department paramedics went to the library after there was a report of a woman down inside the bathroom.

Officer said they found evidence that suggested Rangel had just shot up heroin. Police said they gave her Narcan -- a drug used to counter the effects of heroin -- and she woke up inside the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

Needles, suspected heroin and other apparent evidence were recovered from Rangel's purse.

Strip Mall Tenants Targeted In Early-Morning Burglary

A burglar or burglars caused about $5,000 damage to doors, cabinets and alarm systems at an East Washington Avenue strip mall Thursday night, according to the Madison Police Department.

Police said the burglar or burglars entered through a back door of one the businesses. They said other doors were pried open leading to a common interior hallway which connects all building tenants.

Initial reports indicate small amounts of money were taken during the break-ins, and that property damage caused by the rummaging was much more significant.

Royal Pets Inc., Payday USA, Isthmus Eye Care and the Sandhill Pet Clinic were all victimized, police said.

4 OWI Arrests Made Thursday Morning

In might have been a Wednesday night, but Dane County Sheriff Deputies said it felt more like a weekend after they made four operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated arrests from late Wednesday night into the early morning hours of Thursday. 

At about 12:55 a.m. on Thursday, a resident reported that a man was sleeping in his van in a driveway on the 4600 block of Pierceville Road in the town of Sun Prairie, deputies said. They said they found Daniel D. Dean, 36, of Madison, asleep in the driver's seat with the vehicle running. Dean was arrested on a fourth-offense OWI charge, operating after suspension, felony bail jumping and possession of a schedule 4 narcotic, police said.

Suspect Arrested In North Side Attack On Woman, Son

A 51-year-old man is accused of choking and punching his ex-girlfriend and then ramming her son with a car on the city's north side, according to the Madison Police Department.

Police officials said that the man was arrested at about 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday. They said he was hiding in the basement of a home on the 3700 block of School Road.

Police said the man was wanted in connection to a series of crimes that took place Monday night.

Violence began when the man's ex-girlfriend agreed to get into his car and speak with him, police said. The woman said the man drove to a Packers Avenue parking lot, where he punched and choked her after she refused to rekindle their relationship.

During the attack, the woman said the suspect produced a knife and threatened to kill her and her family, according to the police report.

The woman was able to get away from the suspect, but he followed her to her apartment in the 3700 block of Packers Avenue, police said.

Man Robbed At Gunpoint While Trying To Sell Car Audio Equipment

A 25-year-old Madison man was robbed at gunpoint Monday night while trying to sell car audio equipment to a stranger he had met via the internet, according to Madison police.

The victim had posted two amplifiers for sale on both Craigslist and eBay, police said. A man called, and they arranged to meet on the north side near a convenience store. The seller arrived at the rendezvous point, but the prospective buyer -- by phone -- then directed him to drive a bit farther, into an apartment complex parking lot on the 1500 block of Troy Drive.

The stranger got into the victim's car and displayed a handgun, police said. He kept it on the victim while a second man removed the amplifiers from the backseat.

A police dog tracked to an area apartment, and two men were contacted by officers. The victim was unable to make positive identifications, and the case remains under investigation, according to police.
