Black Hawk Middle School To Get New Community Garden

Black Hawk Middle School on Madison’s north side will benefit from a national campaign that is going to provide the north side school a new community garden.

Madison-based Fiskars Americas, a leading supplier of consumer products for the home, garden and outdoors, has partnered with Community Action Coalition for South Central Wisconsin Inc., Madison Metropolitan School District and The Home Depot Foundation to build a school-community garden full of fruits, vegetables and flowers.

The one-day garden installation will take place on May 26 on the northeast corner of Black Hawk’s campus.

Boys & Girls Club Plans Celebration At East High

The Boys & Girls Club of Dane County has announced plans to hold a celebration for East High School’s 2011 AVID/Teens of Promise program graduating senior class.

Twenty one AVID/TOPS seniors will be graduating in 2011, each with firm plans to obtain a post-secondary education. The celebration of these students will include dinner followed by an inspiring program.

The AVID/TOPS program is in partnership with the Madison Metropolitan School District. The initiative works with high school students to prepare them for college. Teens of Promise offers tutoring, mentorship and paid summer internships, in addition to eligibility for college scholarships.

The event will take place on Wednesday, May 18 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Warner Park Community Recreation Center at 1625 Northport Drive.

MMSD School Board To Host 2 Public Hearings On Budget

The Madison Metropolitan School Board has scheduled two public hearings during which citizens can provide direct comment to board members about the proposed 2011-12 Madison Metropolitan School District budget.

The first public hearing will be on Thursday, May 19 at 5 p.m. at the McDaniels Auditorium in the Doyle Administration Building located at 545 West Dayton Street. The second hearing will be on Sunday, May 22 at 1 p.m. at the Warner Park Community Recreation Center located at 1625 Northport Drive.

Citizens can also email comments about the budget to board@madison.k12.wi.us

District leaders said the board is hoping to finalize its 2011-12 budget in June.

Residents Get Ready For Remarkable Rubber Ducky River Race

The Remarkable Rubber Ducky River Race at Burr Jones Park is scheduled on Sunday, May 14 form 12 to 2 p.m.

The Madison Mallards Baseball Club, Madison Parks, the Madison Parks Foundation, and West Bend are teaming up to host the event at 1820 East Washington Avenue on the Yahara River.

All proceeds of the event will benefit the Goodman Pool Scholarship Fund.

You may purchase Rubber Ducks in advance online at Mallardsbaseball.com or on the day of the event. There will be a limited number of Rubber Ducks available so we encourage event-goers to get there as early as possible or to pre-purchase.

All age groups are welcome to participate.

The first 500 participants will also receive a Rubber Duck as a keepsake from the event.

Local Children's Production To Be Held At Community Rec Center

Playtime Productions Children's Theatre will perform "If the Shoe Fits … A Cinderella Story" on Friday, April 29 at 7 p.m. at the Warner Park Community Recreation Center.

The center is located at 1625 Northport Drive.

Tickets are free, but organizers ask that everyone attending make a $1 donation.

Crohn's And Colitis Walk Set For May 21

The 2011 Take Steps for Crohn's and Colitis Walk is set for May 21 at Warner Park.

The event is being held to raises awareness about the diseases and to raise money to help find a cure for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Registration begins at 4 p.m. on May 21, with the walk starting at 5:30 p.m.

Also, a car show is being hosted in Oregon on May 7, with all proceeds going to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation.

The "Cruzin' for a Cure, Crohn's and Colitis Foundation Car Show" is scheduled to run from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 7 (rain date May 8th) at Prairie View Elementary School, 300 Soden Dr. in Oregon.

Registration is from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and the show will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $10 per car.

Junior League Of Madison Hosts 7th Annual All Dressed Up Event

Klinke Cleaners and the Junior League of Madison will once again be partnering on the seventh annual All Dressed Up event.

All Dressed Up is an opportunity for area high school girls, who might not be able to purchase a new prom dress, to choose from hundreds of new and gently used donated dresses, purses, shoes and jewelry.

After a successful donation drive this year, organizers said there are many new styles, colors and sizes to choose from.

The event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Madison College Truax Campus.

Girls are encouraged to arrive early and bring their high school student IDs.
