Madison, Dane County Dog Parks To Host Spring Cleanup Day

The annual volunteer spring cleanup will be held on Saturday, March 26 from 8 a.m. to noon at local dog exercise parks in Madison and the surrounding communities.

"Madison Parks is pleased to partner with Dane County Parks in hosting the spring cleanup event," said Parks Superintendant Kevin Briski. "This year we are excited to have two new off-leash dog parks at Demetral Park and McCormick Greenspace. The opening of these dog parks was the culmination of Madison Parks and our park patrons coming together to find a solution for more off-leash areas."

Volunteers are asked to bring a scooper to the park where they will be met by a team leader with garbage bags. Those interested in serving as team leaders for the cleanup should contact Dog Park Cleanup Coordinator Pete Blawat at 608-516-8057.

Participating parks include:

Madison College Vet Techs to Host Feral Cat 'Spay Day'

In an effort to reduce the feral cats population, Madison Area Technical College veterinary technician students and instructors are teaming up with the Dane County Friends of Ferals, veterinary students from the University of Wisconsin and local veterinary volunteers to spay and neuter about 75 free-roaming cats.

The animals will also be vaccinated, given anti-parasite medication and have their ears tipped for easy physical identification of sterilization.

"Our vet tech students are involved in a real-life work situation that benefits cats, the community and the students," said veterinarian and Madison College instructor Clarissa Sheldon via a news release.

"Spay Day" runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12, in room 183 at Madison College’s Truax campus.

Public Health Seeks Dog That Bit Woman

The Department of Public Health is looking for information regarding a dog that bit a woman on Wednesday night.

Public Health officials said the woman was shoveling her sidewalk on Windom Way on Madison's North Side at about 6:15 p.m. when she was bit by a dog described as a large, dark brown or black Pitbull or Rottweiler-type dog.

The dog was being walked by a black man in his late 20s or 30s. He was wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt and jeans. He was also walking a second dog that had longer hair and might have been gray in color.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police and fire at 608-255-2345 and ask for the animal services officer.

Two New Dog Parks To Open In Madison

Starting Saturday, four-legged friends in Madison will have two new places to run around.

A fenced-in dog park will be added at McCormick Greenspace on Madison's North Side and Demetral Park on Madison's Near East Side.

The new areas were chosen last year after several community meetings with interested East Side dog owners, as well as people who lived in the proposed neighborhoods.

Cats Blamed For Vahlen St. Apartment Fire

Madison fire investigators believe a fire last week in a second-floor apartment on 1714 Vahlen Street was caused when cats in the apartment knocked over a lamp into a pile of books, bedding and clothing in a rear bedroom.

The occupant of the apartment left the building and called 911. No one else was in the three-unit residence when the fire occurred, according to officials.

The cats were missing for a time, but firefighters said they found them later and they were reunited with their owner.

Crews said they contained the fire damage to the second-floor apartment.
